Train users how to back up and safely store EFS keys. If a backup of a key is available, it can be imported into the profile of a user account and used to decrypt the file. Ensure the existence of a file recovery agent or agents.

By default, the first administrator account to log on in the domain is the recovery agent. By default, on a Windows Server 2003 stand-alone server, there is no default recovery agent. This is also true of Windows XP. If either Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP is joined in a domain, the domain recovery agent will be used. Recovery agent keys must be backed up.

Recall that the Resultant Set Of Policy Wizard and the Gpresult command-line tool are both used to generate RSoP queries and provide the RSoPs for users and computers you specify. In Windows Server 2003, these tools can help you greatly reduce the amount of time you spend troubleshooting. Generating RSoP queries by using the Resultant Set Of Policy Wizard and Gpresult was discussed in detail in Lesson 1.

The createEntityManager() methods return EntityManager instances that manage a distinct extended persistence context. You can pass in a java.util.Map parameter to override or extend any provider-specific properties you did not declare in your persistence.xml file. When you are finished using the EntityManagerFactory, you should close() it (unless it is injected; we ll discuss this later). The isOpen() method allows you to check whether the EntityManagerFactory reference is still valid.

Recall that the Gpupdate tool, which is new in Windows Server 2003 (and also exists in Windows XP Professional), enables you to refresh policy immediately. Gpupdate replaces the Secedit /refreshpolicy command used for refreshing GPOs in Windows 2000. The Gpupdate tool is discussed in 10, Implementing Group Policy.

Design a file recovery process. Self-signed recovery agent certificates can be used, or a PKI/CA solution can be deployed. Deploy key recovery solutions using a public key infrastructure (PKI).

By using the application event log in Event Viewer, you can view Group Policy failure and warning messages, such as the one shown in Figure 11-24. The application event log contains basic predetermined Group Policy events and is used to track problems, not for Group Policy planning. Event log records with the source Userenv pertain to Group Policy events.

In Java EE, it is easy to get an EntityManagerFactory. It can be injected directly into a field or setter method of your EJBs using the @javax.persistence.PersistenceUnit annotation:

File recovery is the process of either restoring a backup of the original keys and then continuing to use the files, or using a file recovery agent to decrypt a file and then returning the file to the owner for encryption. Relying on self-signed certificates makes it difficult to ensure EFS file recovery for more than a few users. Consider the following when designing a file recovery strategy that uses self-signed certificates:
